Why this Markdown to text online converter is different
Most "strip Markdown" tools do a crude find-and-replace and mangle the tricky parts. This one parses the document, so the output is actually clean.
- Structure-aware, not a dumb regex. It parses the Markdown properly, so nested lists, tables, code, and escaped characters come out right, where naive tools break them.
- Tables become clean TSV. Pipe tables convert to tab-separated rows you can paste straight into a spreadsheet, not a wall of pipes. Toggle to keep or drop them.
- Code is preserved, not deleted. Fenced code blocks stay as readable lines, with a toggle. The popular strip-markdown library deletes code and tables by default; this keeps them.
- Math reads as its source.
$E=mc^2$becomesE = mc^2, neither dropped nor garbled. - Link text kept, URLs dropped.
[Alex](https://example.com)becomesAlex, the readable default, with an option to keep the URL alongside it. - Live word, character, and line count. Handy when you are fitting an email, an ATS field, or a hard character limit.
- Made for cleaning up AI output. Paste the
**,#, and backtick-heavy text from ChatGPT or Claude and get clean text for an email, a CMS, or a form. - In your browser, nothing uploaded, works offline. Turn off wifi after the page loads and it still converts.
What is a Markdown to text converter?
Markdown is plain text with light symbols for structure: # for a heading, - for a list item, backticks for code. It is how most READMEs, technical docs, and AI chat replies are written.
Sometimes you want the words without the symbols. A Markdown to text converter takes the source and removes the formatting marks, leaving clean prose you can paste anywhere.
This tool reads the Markdown, works out its structure, and rewrites it as plain text. A ## Heading loses its # marks, **bold** and _italic_ shed their emphasis marks, and a [link](url) becomes just its visible text. Because it understands the structure, a nested list stays correctly indented and a table becomes clean rows rather than a jumble.
How to convert Markdown to text
Three steps. No account, no upload, no waiting on a server.
Add your Markdown
Paste it in, or drop a .md file onto the editor. A README, notes, or something an AI chat handed you all work.
Set the options
Choose whether to keep or drop tables and code, and whether to keep link URLs. The preview updates as you go.
Copy or download
Select Copy to send the text to your clipboard, or Download to save a .txt file.
What the converter removes, and what it keeps
Most marks come off cleanly. A few things convert to a plainer form, and this table shows which.
| Removed | Kept or converted |
|---|---|
Heading # marks (the text stays) | The words, their order, and paragraph breaks |
**, *, _ emphasis marks | Nested lists, correctly indented |
| Backtick and code fence marks | Code text, preserved as readable lines (toggle) |
Blockquote > marks and list bullets | Tables, converted to tab-separated rows (toggle) |
| Link URLs (kept optionally) | Link text, and math as its plain source |
Supported Markdown features
- Nested lists and structure. Because it parses the document, ordered, bulleted, and nested lists keep their shape instead of collapsing.
- Tables. Pipe tables convert to tab-separated (TSV) rows, ready to paste into Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers.
- Code. Fenced and inline code lose their marks but keep their text, so nothing is silently deleted.
- Math. Inline
$…$and block$$…$$read as their plain source, so$E=mc^2$lands asE = mc^2. - Links and counts. Links reduce to their visible text, and a live word, character, and line count updates as you work.
For the syntax itself, see the Markdown cheat sheet and Markdown documentation.
Common uses
- Clean up an AI draft. Paste the Markdown a chatbot gave you and get plain text with no leftover symbols to remove by hand.
- Paste into a plain field. Some inputs, like an ATS form or a legacy CMS, do not read Markdown, so strip it first and paste clean text.
- Move a table into a spreadsheet. The TSV output drops straight into Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers.
- Hit a length limit. The live word and character count helps you trim to an email or field limit.
Markdown to Text converter FAQ
Is the Markdown to text converter free?
Yes. It is free with no signup, no watermark, and no daily limit. Open the page, convert as many documents as you like, and close the tab.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs as JavaScript in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. It even works offline once the page has loaded.
Does it handle nested lists and tables correctly?
Yes. It parses the Markdown rather than running a find-and-replace, so nested lists keep their indentation and tables convert cleanly, where naive strippers mangle them.
What happens to tables?
Pipe tables convert to tab-separated (TSV) rows, so you can paste them straight into a spreadsheet. A toggle lets you keep or drop tables entirely.
What happens to code blocks?
Code is preserved, not deleted. Fenced and inline code lose their backticks but keep their text as readable lines, with a toggle to drop them if you prefer.
What happens to math in my Markdown?
Math reads as its plain source. An expression like $E=mc^2$ becomes E = mc^2, so it is neither dropped nor turned into garbled characters.
What happens to links?
A link is reduced to its visible text by default, so [Alex](https://example.com) becomes Alex. There is an option to keep the URL after the text.
Does it count words and characters?
Yes. A live word, character, and line count updates as you work, which is useful when you are fitting an email, an ATS field, or a hard limit.
Can I convert several Markdown files at once?
The tool converts one document at a time. Paste or drop a file, copy or download the text, then repeat for the next one.
Does the Markdown to text converter work on mobile?
Yes. It runs in mobile browsers, so you can paste Markdown and copy plain text from a phone or tablet.
