Why this Markdown to Word online converter is different
Most Markdown to Word converters get the hard parts wrong. Here is what this one does that they usually do not.
- The same engine as our desktop app. This is not a weekend script. It is the exact DOCX engine from the Markdific desktop app that people pay for, running in your browser tab.
- Formulas come through as formulas. Inline
$…$and block$$…$$render with KaTeX and go into Word as clean images, so an equation always looks right. It never lands as raw\frac{...}or garbled text, which is the single most common failure in other converters. - Real Word heading styles, not fake big text.
## Headingmaps to Word's actual Heading 2 style, so the navigation pane, the automatic table of contents, and one-click restyling all work. You edit it like a real Word document, because it is one. - Tables keep their columns. Explicit column widths mean tables render correctly in Word and Apple Pages, with none of the column-collapse that crushes other converters' output into a single squashed line.
- The whole Markdown feature set. GitHub Flavored Markdown (tables, task lists, footnotes, strikethrough,
[!NOTE]alerts), KaTeX math, Mermaid diagrams, syntax-highlighted code, definition lists, and emoji. If it renders on GitHub, it converts here. - Mermaid diagrams actually come through. Flowcharts and sequence diagrams embed as images instead of being silently dropped.
- Correct in any language. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and right-to-left Arabic all survive intact, tested with a document of around 1,500 Chinese characters. Emoji come through too.
- Truly private, and it works offline. Everything runs as JavaScript in your tab, so nothing is uploaded. Turn off wifi after the page loads and it still converts.
- The small touches. Your file is named after its first
#heading, notdownload.docx, with no watermark, no signup, and no daily cap.
What is a Markdown to Word converter?
Markdown is plain text with light symbols for structure: # for a heading, - for a list item, backticks for code. It is how most READMEs, technical docs, and AI chat replies are written.
Word wants something richer: real heading styles, tables you can click into, and formatting you can change. A Markdown to Word converter bridges the two.
This tool reads the Markdown, works out its structure, and rebuilds it as a .docx using Word's own styles. A ## Heading becomes Word's Heading 2, a pipe table becomes a real Word table, and a fenced code block becomes monospaced text. You get a document you can keep editing, not a picture of one.
How to convert Markdown to Word
Three steps. No account, no upload, no waiting on a server.
Add your Markdown
Paste it in, or drop a .md file onto the editor. A README, notes, or something an AI chat handed you all work.
Check the preview
The preview pane shows exactly how headings, tables, and code will land. Fix anything before you export.
Download the .docx
Select Download Word. The file opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, WPS Office, and LibreOffice.
What converts, and what doesn't
Most things map cleanly to Word. A few are approximated, and this table shows exactly which.
| Comes through | Stripped or approximated |
|---|---|
| Headings H1 to H6 become real Word heading styles (navigation pane and auto table of contents work) | Math renders as a clean image, not an editable Word equation |
| Bold, italic, strikethrough, colored text | Mermaid diagrams come through as an image |
| Tables, with explicit column widths and a shaded header row (no column collapse) | Code keeps its indentation but not its syntax colors |
| Ordered, bulleted, and nested lists (and task lists) | Remote image URLs may not embed yet (embedded images do) |
| Code blocks, links, blockquotes, GFM alerts, definition lists, emoji | Arbitrary HTML or CSS layout is not reproduced |
| Embedded images, and any language including right-to-left Arabic |
Supported Markdown features
- GitHub Flavored Markdown. Tables, task lists, footnotes, strikethrough, and alert callouts (
> [!NOTE]) all parse. - Math with KaTeX. Inline
$…$and block$$…$$render, then embed into the Word file as clean images, so they never turn into raw source. - Code blocks. Fenced code keeps its whitespace and lands as monospace text you can read and edit in Word.
- Mermaid diagrams. Flowcharts and sequence diagrams draw in the preview and embed into the document as an image.
- Definition lists, emoji, and every language. Including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and right-to-left Arabic.
For the syntax itself, see the Markdown cheat sheet and Markdown documentation.
Common uses
- Nothing leaves your machine. The conversion is JavaScript running in your tab, so turning off wifi after the page loads does not stop it. We never see your file.
- A README you have to hand over in Word. Docs live in Markdown, but the reviewer wants a Word file. This gets you there without Pandoc or a command line.
- Clean up an AI draft. Paste the Markdown a chatbot gave you and get an editable
.docxwith no leftover**and#to delete by hand. - Multilingual documents. Convert notes or docs written in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Arabic and keep the text intact.
Markdown to Word converter FAQ
Is the Markdown to Word converter free?
Yes. It is free with no signup, no install, no watermark, and no daily limit. Open the page, convert as many documents as you like, and close the tab.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs as JavaScript in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. It even works offline once the page has loaded.
Is this the same as the Markdific desktop app?
It uses the same DOCX conversion engine as the paid Markdific desktop app, running in your browser. The desktop app adds a full native editor, opening and editing .md files, and export without a browser tab.
Will my tables and formatting survive the conversion?
Yes. Headings become real Word heading styles, pipe tables become Word tables with explicit column widths and a shaded header row, and lists, bold, italic, links, and blockquotes all carry over.
What happens to math in my Markdown?
KaTeX renders your inline $…$ and block $$…$$ math, and it embeds into the Word file as a clean image. It always looks correct and never appears as raw LaTeX, though it is a picture rather than an editable Word equation.
Do headings become real Word styles?
Yes. A ## Heading maps to Word's actual Heading 2 style, so the navigation pane, the automatic table of contents, and one-click restyling all work, unlike converters that only output large bold text.
Does it export .docx or .doc?
It exports a modern .docx file, which opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, WPS Office, and LibreOffice.
Does it work with Chinese, Japanese, or Arabic?
Yes. Multilingual text, including right-to-left Arabic and emoji, converts intact. It has been tested with a document of around 1,500 Chinese characters.
What happens to images in my Markdown?
Embedded and pasted images are placed into the Word document so they appear inline. Images referenced by a remote URL may not embed yet, so embed them in your Markdown for now if you need them in the file.
Can I convert several Markdown files at once?
The tool converts one document at a time. Paste or drop a file, download the .docx, then repeat for the next one.
What Markdown syntax is supported?
Standard Markdown plus GitHub Flavored Markdown: tables, task lists, footnotes, strikethrough, and alert callouts, along with code blocks, links, images, blockquotes, definition lists, and emoji.
Does the converter work on mobile?
Yes. It runs in mobile browsers, so you can paste Markdown and download a .docx from a phone or tablet.
